Mutter or Matar paneer

No introduction is required for this dish,, Matar Paneer, the ever popular Indian Vegetarian dish which is widely available in almost all Indian restaurants. It is essentially the cottage cheese cooked with fresh green peas in a rich tomato gravy. Can be enjoyed best with roti / paratha.


Ingredients:


  • Paneer or cottage cheese - 250 gms
  • Onions - 2, chopped
  • Tomatoes - 4, chopped
  • Green peas - 1 cup
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 2 teaspoon
  • Salt, Turmeric powder 
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Kashmiri chilli powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Kasoori methi - 1 teaspoon, Soaked in water
  • Sugar - a pinch

Cut the paneer into cubes and fry till golden brown.


Heat butter in a pan or a kadai. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once the seeds start spluttering, add ginger-garlic paste. Saute for few seconds. Add onions and stir fry till the onions become translucent.


Then add chopped tomatoes and cook on a medium flame till they become little soft.


Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and salt and mix well. Cook for 4-5 minutes on a medium flame. Add a pinch of sugar, if you like.


Add green peas and cook for another 5 minutes. 


Add little water if required if the gravy is too thick.


Add fried paneer pieces and simmer for few more minutes.


Add half cup of hot water or more depending on your gravy requirement. Add soaked kasoori methi with water and combine together. Boil for 5 more minutes over low heat.


Serve mutter or matar paneer hot with rotis or Parathas.
